Exeter - Rok Community Challenge

Summer 2007 saw Foot Anstey support national builder Rok with three of their Community Challenge projects in Exeter. Their aim was to utilise Rok’s project management skills and craftsmanship and draw communities together to help themselves. With three different challenges the pressure was on, Foot Anstey staff braved the elements, rolled their shirt sleeves up and set to.

The first project saw the renovation of St Michael’s Church Hall. Around 50 volunteers, including staff from Foot Anstey, worked hard to transform the hall in just two days to provide much needed community space. Susan Illing of the Heavitree Team Ministry sent a message of thanks to the volunteers of Foot Anstey:

“… it was wonderful to experience the fun atmosphere, as well as achieving so much in a short space of time! … Thanks to your volunteers, the result is not only a much more welcoming church hall, but also a real camaraderie amongst those volunteers…”

The second project involved tidying up the garden of Whitestone Village Hall. One Saturday morning the volunteers found an unwelcoming and scruffy garden which they transformed into a smart recreational area which is now a perfect place for both young and old to relax or hold local events.

The final project took place at St Mary’s Community Hall in Dawlish Warren. The hall was in much need of a make-over and volunteers set about painting, repairing fences, clearing guttering and much more to make the hall a fully functioning community facility for local groups such as the Brownies, WI and Church Committees.
