Further Education

Change, change and more change. Quantitative assessment of performance across all colleges via the Framework for Excellence, to be operational across the sector from September 2009; Changes in Funding provision; the increased participation age; the introduction of Diplomas and the establishment of a new department, the DIUS, with a policy to encourage a focus on skills, employability and social mobility. Further Education Colleges are being called on to provide training for those who have lost or fear losing their jobs; to provide career support for individuals and to provide training for employees, making businesses better placed to survive. These are some of the issues identified by the Secretary of State for Innovation Universities and Skills and The Secretary of State for Children Schools and Families for the academic year 2008/9.

Further Education Colleges are under great pressure to perform. It is therefore imperative that colleges within the sector have proper support and advice. Decisions sometimes have to be taken quickly which means that advisors need to have an understanding of the sector and are able to work in partnership, giving timely considered and specialist advice.
