Tony read Law at Oxford University from 1974-7 and qualified as a solicitor 1980. He spent the first three years of his career working in the City of London. He joined Foot Anstey in 1983 and became a partner in 1987.
For the first seven years at Foot Anstey Tony advised clients involved in civil litigation in High Court. In 1990 he became a full time media lawyer and is now the Head of the Media Team.
Tony and his colleagues advise a large number of publishers on various areas of law, including pre- and post-publication libel, contempt of court, human rights, confidentiality/privacy, court secrecy orders, data protection, copyright, trade marks and passing off, Press Complaints Commission issues, lotteries, promotions and advertising and freedom of information. Recently, Tony has been advising many internet publishers on various legal issues, particularly relating to the protection of intellectual property rights.
He also writes regular articles on all aspects of media law and speaks at conferences for the publishing industry.
Tony is a notary public and also a Privy Council Agent, and in recent years, he and his team have acted for overseas clients in a number of high profile Privy Council cases. Because of his experience in advising non-UK clients and his understanding of their needs, Tony is also the first point of contact at Foot Anstey for international clients who wish to instruct us. He will direct clients to the specialist Foot Anstey lawyer who is best suited to advise, for example, on establishing a business in England; trading internationally; resolving disputes and/or litigating in England; pursuing or responding to appeals to the Privy Council; and using the UK’s institutions to resolve trade disputes.
