Making Plymouth Great
Attracting Young People to Plymouth
Bill Martin, Editor of the Evening Herald, challenged participants at the Making Plymouth Great Showcase on 14th November at the Royal William Yard to create displays that are thought provoking and innovative for both young and old.
This Showcase will feature firms of all sizes and sectors with one thing in common - they are all producing extraordinary work that is helping to build Plymouth’s reputation as a city that means business.
Plymouth law firm, Foot Anstey, an Associated Partner with Enterprising Plymouth, took up the challenge wanting to make their display an inspiration for young people to enter a career in law.
Penny Eyre, Marketing Manager explained “Asking students why they wanted to follow a career in law seemed the first step so we approached the University of Plymouth for their help. Sixteen law students spent the afternoon with us telling us why they chose law, where they want to train and work when they complete their degree, why they decided to study at Plymouth and how they see a lawyer’s role in the community changing in 20 years time.
“Many of them wanted to go into law because of the contact with clients. They also hoped that they could make a real difference to people’s lives.
“Over half the students come from the area and are keen to stay in Plymouth. They value the amenities the city and its surrounding area can offer.
“The session was two-way with the students wanting to hear about Foot Anstey’s training programme that offers trainees experience in advising business clients, private individuals and people who need the support of Legal Aid.
“We asked for law student volunteers to come onto our space at the showcase to talk to visitors and we were overwhelmed by their enthusiasm to participate.”
Simon Payne, Head of the Law School at the University of Plymouth said: “Earlier this month we formally launched our Law School. We now offer academic and professional legal education. One feature of the Law School is that it is well connected with the legal profession through work based learning and work experience schemes and so we are delighted that our talented law students have this chance to work with Foot Anstey in promoting the opportunities locally for legal study and career progression, a combination which helps to reinforce why Plymouth is great”.
Third year University of Plymouth student in Digital Arts & Technology, Steve Farmer, will use ideas from the students to produce the animated visuals at the Showcase for Foot Anstey.
