Foot Anstey Joins The Elite
Leading South West law firm Foot Anstey has become the first firm of solicitors outside London to be appointed as a Privy Council Agent.
The Privy Council is the highest appeal Court for a number of Commonwealth countries and consists of UK Law Lords and senior judges from the Commonwealth. It hears final appeals in cases from around the world, just as the House of Lords hears final appeals for cases in the UK.
For practical reasons, lawyers involved in cases being appealed to the Privy Council cannot complete the formalities from abroad. As a result, a number of law firms, known as Privy Council Agents, represent these foreign lawyers.
Traditionally, all these Privy Council Agents have been based in London. It is believed that Foot Anstey is the first firm outside London to be appointed to this elite band of lawyers. The firm’s successful application was based on its experience in representing The Gleaner and The Sunday Gleaner, Jamaica’s largest selling newspapers.
Tony Jaffa, head of Foot Anstey’s media team said, “This appointment confirms our reputation as market leaders in a variety of specialisms and also highlights our ongoing commitment to excellent customer service and advice. I am particularly pleased that our reputation in the field of advising newspapers has been recognised at an international level.”
