Teams Try To Beat The Marine Commandos For Charity

Teams from across the South West gathered at 42 Commandos Royal Marines base at Bickleigh to take part in the CHICKS’ Commando Challenge on Sunday 27 April to raise funds for CHICKS Children’s Charity.

The event which was sponsored by Foot Anstey Solicitors was a great fun day where teams took part in various challenges including Archery, Laser Rifle range shooting and many very physical challenges like rowing, scaling the climbing wall, tent erecting and a 60 kilo weight stretcher race. The civilians tried to beat the marine team and some certainly gave them a run for their money. The winning team were from Atlantic Inertial Systems and were called “Carlsberg don’t do Commando teams” which seemed very appropriate when they won.

The challenges the teams undertook were training exercises the Marines undertake every day. CHICKS is the 42 Commandos chosen charity and this is just one event they are supporting in order to raise funds for underprivileged children.

Jenny Paton Corporate and Events Executive for CHICKS said “It was a wonderful day and we would like to thank the 42 Commandos especially PTI Paul Wood who arranged all the challenges. We are planning to repeat this event again with 4 2 Commando next year so please get in touch if you would like to reserve your team space.”

Jonathan Kitchin, solicitor and team leader for the Foot Anstey team said “We all thoroughly enjoyed the day. The challenges were tough but we were determined to give it our best shot and knowing that we were raising much needed funds for CHICKS helped ease the pain! The challenges also make good team building exercises, so I recommend that companies sign up early for next year to avoid being disappointed.”

Editor Notes:
CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids) is a registered charity. Since we began in 1992, CHICKS has provided positive respite breaks to more than 5,000 disadvantaged children from across the UK including Plymouth. The children that come to CHICKS face complex problems; many are growing up living in poverty and many more have been abused, neglected, live in care or are themselves ‘child carers’, bearing the extraordinary responsibility of caring for disabled or terminally ill relatives.

During their stay at one of CHICKS’ two retreats in the beautiful West Country, children enjoy a week of fun and adventure, away from the stresses of their day to day lives. Activities such as pony trekking, swimming and rock climbing are all wrapped up in a week of team games, ice creams, trips to the beach, reading and even chess! This year CHICKS aim to help over 800 disadvantaged children receive a vital break ‘away from it all’. We have two retreats in the West country, our Coastal Retreat which is situated in eight acres of grounds and is only two miles away from the beach near Par in Cornwall. We also have a Moorland Retreat which is nestled on the edge of Dartmoor just 5 miles outside Tavistock.
