Plymouth’s New Landmark Building Handed Over

Keys to a brand new landmark building overlooking Sutton Harbour, Plymouth – Salt Quay House have been officially handed over by contractors Kier Western.

Sutton Harbour Group has formally taken ownership of the state-of-the-art offices to allow new occupier, South West legal firm Foot Anstey to start work on the interior next month and into early 2009.

The site on which the building stands has been developed by Plymouth-based regeneration and transport firm, the Sutton Harbour Group and Kier Western was appointed as the main contractor. It is the first private sector office to be built in Plymouth city centre this millennium.

Due for occupation during the spring next year, the striking 42,000 sq ft building has been developed on an existing brown field site and is part of Sutton Harbour Group’s vibrant regeneration of the waterfront.

Jason Schofield, head of development for the Sutton Harbour Group, said: “Signalling the near completion of this major project for Sutton Harbour, it is particularly pleasing that we have reached the point where keys have officially been handed over. On budget and on schedule, we are delighted that Foot Anstey will now been fitting out the interior ready for use early next year. Over £100 million worth of investment has been made in the regeneration of Sutton Harbour and the fact that Foot Anstey has chosen to move here will make a huge difference to the area.”

John Westwell, managing partner at Foot Anstey added: “We are delighted to be starting the fit out of Salt Quay House - I know how much our clients will benefit from the state of the art facilities which will be offered from next Spring - great credit is due to the Sutton Harbour Group, Kier Western and their teams for delivering the project on time."

David Snell, director of contractor Kier Western commented: “We are proud to have been main contractor on this landmark building setting a new standard of quality design and construction.”

The seven storey Salt Quay House was designed by Form Design Group Architects and offers spectacular views over the harbour towards Plymouth Hoe. The office accommodation will be of the highest quality and offer client facilities on the sixth floor and a roof garden on the seventh.

Limestone cladding has been used for the exterior of the building and particular attention has been paid to the site’s heritage – historic features have been retained throughout. The use of renewable energy systems has been incorporated and the building has been designed to meet Best Practice in the specification of offices (BCO). It also achieves a ‘Very Good’ score using the Building Research Establishments “environmental assessment method” – the world’s most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings (BREEAM).
