The Dangers Of Being Too Casual With Seasonal Workers

One of the region’s largest employment law teams is hosting a seminar for employers of seasonal and temporary workers on Friday 26 June at The Eden Project.

Specialist lawyers from Foot Anstey will look at the legal implications of employing this casual workforce which is of vital importance to businesses in Westcountry due to its flexibility. Whilst many businesses in the region take on seasonal workers, some may be unaware of the penalties for not getting the correct employment procedures in place. Recently published figures from employment tribunals show that the average award in a tribunal for unfair dismissal alone is £8,050. In addition legal costs in defending a matter through to a hearing (even if you win) can be £10,000 or more.

The seminar will update delegates on such topics as the employment rights of seasonal workers and temporary workers; the law surrounding young people and foreign labour; managing the employment relationship; the implications of using fixed term contracts and agency workers; and how to avoid costly tribunal claims.

James Collings, Associate at Foot Anstey, said: “Adopting a laissez faire approach towards taking on seasonal staff and not having the correct paperwork in order from the outset is a high risk approach.   This seminar will offer practical tips on putting the correct procedures in place and provide employers with the confidence to actively utilise this rich and flexible pool of skilled and motivated workers.”

Registration starts from 1.30pm and the event will conclude at 4.30pm. The cost of £25 includes refreshments and a day pass for The Eden Project. To book your place please contact Cerys Topliss on 01872 243305 or by email cerys.topliss@footanstey.com
