South West Athletes Get Ready To Tri Again

Over 400 competitors from across the South West are warming up for one of the highlights of the region’s sporting calendar, the Taunton Deane Foot Anstey Triathlon. The event is organised by Somerset RC Tri Club and Tone Leisure, sponsored by Foot Anstey and supported by the Somerset County Gazette.

The triathlon is always a sell-out and this year is no exception. All 400 places were fully booked within two days and there are still over 100 people waiting for cancellation places.

The triathlon, being held at Wellington Sports Centre on Sunday 16 May, has been an annual event since 1998.

The race is popular because it has something for every level of fitness. The Sprint event is for the more experienced athletes and a Novice event is open to anyone new to this event or who has taken part in less than three triathlons in the past. Both events have male and female categories in the age groups of Junior (16 -20), Senior (21-39), Veteran (40 -49), Super Veteran (50+) and Vintage Veteran (60+).

The triathletes will use the Wellington Sports Centre swimming pool for the swim element before taking to the quiet roads for the cycle ride (towards Milverton and Wiveliscombe) and then a mixture of footpaths and lanes for the run.

Sponsors of the event Foot Anstey Solicitors enter their own competitors every year. Taunton Partner Andrew Hannam said; “This is such a great event for athletes and a real fun day out for the family with plenty of side attractions to keep everyone busy. This is the fourth year Foot Anstey has supported this popular community event and I am looking forward to taking part again, along with a growing number of my colleagues from our offices around the region.”

Due to the event’s popularity it requires a considerable number of marshals. This year charitable organisations are being asked to provide volunteers for the task, for a donation of up to £400.
