Corner Competition Reaches Climax

The Somerset Corner Cricket Club Competition reaches its finale on Friday 27th July when 350 boys and girls will have played cricket at five different venues in Somerset over 3 days.

The Corner competition gives a large numbers of young players an opportunity to play representative cricket in Somerset and the opportunity for selection to the county squad.

The Corner Competition, supported by Foot Anstey Solicitors, is now in it’s 11th season and is dedicated to the late Tony Corner, who was a great supporter of youth cricket in Somerset.

The Corner teams who play represent the North West, North East, South East and South West and each corner has five teams for the under 10s, the 11s, 12s 13s and 14 years .

The competition started in its present format a year ago in June 2006 when clubs and schools nominated girls and boys aged 10-14 years for selection to the training squads of 16-18 players. Over the winter the squads have trained with coaches from Somerset County Cricket Club.

The fixture programme in 2007 has been increased to include Twenty20 day on the Friday. This follows the main matches, which range between 30 and 45 overs in length and are played as 12 a-side matches with the 12th man allowed to field and bowl but not bat.

Pete Sanderson, Somerset Performance Director of Youth Cricket said: "The aim of the matches is to give as much opportunity as possible to all the players and to see how they perform in a representative game as well as giving the better players from clubs and schools a chance to play out of their comfort zones."

Taunton law firm Foot Anstey, has sponsored the year’s activity which has attracted matched funding from “Sportsmatch”, the Government’s business sponsorship incentive scheme for sport.

Mark Lewis, Partner at Foot Anstey said “This whole competition and the lead up to it with its specialised coaching is a great way to encourage boys and girls to play cricket to bring on talent for our county and national teams. Not everyone made it through to the competition stage of the programme, but what is more important is that they have fun participating, keep fit, and develop an appreciation of the game.”

Girls and boys wanting to enter the competition for next year should contact their local cricket club or school.
