Tenth Anniversary For Taunton Deane Foot Anstey Triathalon
The 10th annual Taunton Deane Foot Anstey Triathlon took place on Sunday 20th May 2007 in Wellington and proved yet again to be one of the most popular sporting events in the South West calendar.
A special prize was given to Adrian Knight to mark his competing and completing all 10 triathlons. Adrian, who lives in Taunton, has never won a prize before and was surprised to receive the cup. He has been a member of the Somerset RC Trio Club since it began and has used the same trusty bike in all of the 10 triathlons.
This year the event was sponsored by solicitors Foot Anstey for the first time and organised by Tone Leisure and, local triathlon club, Somerset RC Tri.
The race attracted everyone from complete beginners to the elite and had something for every level of fitness.
The triathletes used the Wellington Sports Centre swimming pool for the swim element before taking to the quiet roads for the cycle ride (towards Milverton and Wiveliscombe) and then a mixture of footpaths/quiet lanes for the run.
Andrew Hannam, partner at Foot Anstey who presented the prizes and also competed said “I want to thank everyone concerned in the organising of the event including Tone Leisure, all the 70 helpers from the Tri Club and their families for being marshals, time keepers and helpers. They made it a really well organised and enjoyable day for competitors at all levels of fitness and their families.
“Our sponsorship gives us the opportunity to say ’thank-you’ to those in the community who have supported us in our successful expansion of our firm in Taunton.”
Karen Arnold, Chair of Tone Leisure Board of Trustees said "Tone Leisure were delighted with the event and pleased to be able to host the Triathlon. It totally fits with our mission of ’getting more people, more active, more often’ and the novice event, in particular, provides a perfect opportunity for newcomers to the sport to have a go."
The Triathlon 400 places are divided into 250 for the sprint and 150 for the novice.
The Sprint event was for the more experienced athletes and the Novice event was open to anyone new to this sporting event or who has completed less than three triathlons in the past. Both events had male and female categories in the age groups of Junior (16 -20), Senior (21-39), Veteran (40 -49), Super Veteran (50+) and Vintage Veteran (60+).
