Association Of South West Mediators
The first meeting of a new organisation to promote the use of mediation as an alternative to expensive court cases will be on Tuesday 27th June in Plymouth. The new Association of South West Mediators is open to anyone interested in mediation, whether they are lawyers or non-lawyers, who work in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset.
Speakers at this first meeting include Lord Justice Sir Brian Neill (retired), Jonathan Dingle, barrister, mediator and Secretary of the Civil Mediation Council, Judge James Wigmore, a full time mediator, Andrew Hannam, Accredited Mediator and Partner at Foot Anstey and the chair is Dr Michael Powers QC, a Plymouth based leading clinical negligence mediator.
Andrew Hannam said “Mediation has grown enormously over the last 5 years with a year on year doubling in the number of cases mediated over that period. There has been a further increase in the take-up since Mediation Awareness Week last October.
“The Government estimated that £100million was saved last year as a result of mediation being used in disputes involving Government services.”
The Association will represent the interests of all mediators, lawyer and non-lawyers working in the South West, provide mediators, and raise standards, awareness and professional skills. It will also liaise locally and nationally, with the other associations, mediation providers, the Court Service and judiciary.
For more information contact Andrew Hannam on 01823 337151 or Mike Norton on 01823 442671. Admission is free and for those unable to attend but wishing to register interest, please email aswm@clara.co.uk
